Source:Martin, Georgianna L., et al. "New Evidence On The Effects Of Fraternity And Sorority Affiliation During The First Year Of College." Journal Of College Student Development 52.5 (2011): 543-559. ERIC. Web. 13 Oct. 2016.Research Question: How do sororities at Mizzou influence and effect the academic performance of its individual members?
Before reading this source, I really thought it had some interesting angles.
Part 2:
In this story, they explored the effects of fraternity and sorority membership on first-year students' development. They completed the study across 11 institutions. Although many educators perceive fraternities and sororities as anti-intellectual organizations, fraternity and sorority members in this study did not differ from their unaffiliated peers on the educational outcomes explored. The study was conducted over multiple students from different universities. The article also shared its data and tables with us, so we can see the evidence for ourselves.
This article views the side that I am having some serious doubts on. If there is not correlation between academic achievement and partying, than why is it so frowned upon? The idea that Greek life also lives that lifestyle quite frequently makes me questions how their grades are on average the same as peers? What is the most confusing about all of this, is both sides have evidence against the topic. I can't decide which side to agree with anymore.
I am not sure how to take the information the topic is giving me, because it is all conflicting. This source states that there is not correlation between academic achievement declining with Greek Life. Other sources say differently. This source really didn't help me figure out which side is accurate. If anything, this source just made me even more lost.
Overall, the questions this article makes me as are:
1.) How do I choose the right side?
2.) What is sources have conflicting evidence?
3.) How do you justify which evidence is accurate?
