Garic Wainit Source 2

Rankin, Susan, et al. "The Influence Of Climate On The Academic And Athletic Success Of Student-Athletes: Results From A Multi-Institutional National Study." Journal Of Higher Education 87.5 (2016): 701-730. Professional Development Collection. Web. 9 Oct. 2016.

Question: What is the significance of the climate that surrounds students athletes and how can it impact them academically and athletically.

Initial thoughts: Before reading this source my initial thought on this source before reading this were; how could the climate or surroundings of student-athlete effect his or hers academic and athletic success as well as value to the university. Others thoughts were what kind of climate is suited best for a student-athlete or if the climate really mattered for the success of the student-athlete in both categories. What kind of climate needs to be promoted at the college universities to have more successful student-athletes?

Step 2

The journal article discusses how campus climate has a substantial impact on student-athletes' academic and athletic outcomes. Climate is defined as the, "current attitudes, behaviors, and standards of employees and students that concern the access for, inclusion, and level of respect for individual and groups needs, abilities, and potential" in this source. The source points out that for student athletes academics and athletics conflict with each other. Athletes on average spend 40-45 hours a week practicing their sport. Most of these athletes also stated that they spent more time on their sport than on on there academic work. The source also points out that if a student-athlete had a dedicated and supportive system at the institution that their academic performance increase. With the high demand of their respective sport student-athletes stated that they couldn't go into their desired field of study. Climate was measured by seven different factors as listed: "perception of respect, perceptions of climate, personal comfort with teammate diversity, interactions with faculty members, interactions with athletic personnel, and perceived extent to which the athletic department address discrimination". Climate also effects student-athletes' differently depending on what race, gender, or how they identify themselves sexually. For example black student-athletes report to have lower levels of academic success compared to their white peers. Women student-athletes reported to have higher levels of success in both categories. LGBTQ student-athletes experienced a negative climate than their Heterosexual peers. Three groups reported higher levels of academic success that being of: white, women, and heterosexual. The source also reveals that strong relationships with faculty and student can lead to academic success. These interactions can boost not only his or her success, but as well as athletic success and identity. Overall the campus is a big part of whether or not student-athletes succeed.

This source really doesn't change my thinking of my topic instead it has opened up new doors to look into to make my paper better. I say that because originally when I thought of this question I wasn't thinking of how race, gender, or even sexual identity would factor into my question or paper. This source has also shed some light on how the climate that surrounds a student-athlete can affect he or she in many different ways from different aspects.

This source responds to my first source by complimenting it in a way. In both sources both state that for a student-athlete to successful both academically and athletically they need to have relationship with the faculty members and the university needs to set in place a system that would help the student-athletes succeed. A way I could put these two sources into a conversation with one another could be to try to mesh them together. For example how race plays a role in the students academic success and athletic success possibly.

New questions:
Does discrimination play a role in the value of student-athetles academic and athletic success? What climate best fits student-athletes here on Mizzou's campus? What are some ways to improve a climate of a student-athlete? For the next thing I want to research are the faculty or campus and what they are doing to make sure that their student athletes are succeeding academically and athletically. I still want answers to how the campus values their student athletes. As well as what programs if any are doing to help these student-athletes succeed.
