Southall, Richard M. "The Pros And Cons Of Making
Major Reforms In The American Collegiate Athletic System." Congressional
Digest 94.6 (2015): 8. MasterFILE Premier. Web. 10 Oct. 2016.
What would the payment of student athletes mean to the rest of the
student body?
Before reading this article, I was interested because the title
states making reforms in the American collegiate athletic system. Considering
paying athletes is a huge reform that’s being debated; I figured why not. Also,
for my paper I wanted to include positives and negatives, so this article
featuring pros and cons was very beneficial. After reading I questioned
changing my question around a bit. I felt this article was legit to use because
of the amount of expertise and numerical statistics used.
While reading I noticed a statement saying athletic programs are
issuing way more scholarships than before. At this point I figured this article
would answer my question but not fully. Which is why I’m considering changing
my question, but I don’t know to what. I
agreed with this article pros, but the cons don’t seem to fully be there. I
sense some favoritism to the NCAA, which would explain the lack of cons. This
source didn’t mention much about the regular student body.
I agree with my last source more, because it actually mentioned
normal students which was my primary goal. But I like that this article featured
more statistical facts about the NCAA. Overall this source was a downgrade from
my previous source.
This
source led me to questions like how should we fund these payments for athletes?
Would some sports earn more money than other? Since this is similar to a job,
would it certain rules they need to abide by? Also, would students really agree
with a rising tuition? Do most students pick a college because of their sports
teams? Overall this article didn’t answer any of the questions I needed to
answer. Next, I plan on finding a source mostly leaning towards angry feelings
towards payments. Once completing that task, I shall be able to properly
answering my question of, What would the payment
of student athletes mean to the rest of the student body?
