Question: What are the significants of extra academic programs that the school provide have on collegiate athletes?
Before reading: I question what kind of academic programs were being instilled to help collegiate athletes succeed academically. Do these programs actually yield results and if so are these result average or above average? What made this model different from other models? It made me also think about how supportive a university is for their collegiate athletes.
Step 2:
Summary: Collegiate athletes are able to be successful not only on the field in college but off the field. To make this happen the institution needs a model that works for the student-athlete. The three things that are of concern to collegiate athletes are the increasing demands for collegiate student-athlete, the transition from H.S. to college, as well as time management. Generally sometimes student athletes are not as prepared as general students transitioning into college especially for athletes who may have learning problems are put into worse position academically. So this leads to the academic institution instillation of academic programs to help their student-athletes succeed. The general requirements for a student athlete are not that demanding I do have to say; meaning that they must maintain only a 2.0 GPA does not push these athletes academically giving them more room to maybe slack off or not worry as much about their grades. The school that is looked at in this source is West Chester University which is a DII school. WCU has instilled a model that has been looked at to be successful. They instilled coordinator to each athletes to make sure they are academically successful. The Academic Mentoring program was made to help coordinate students who might be in trouble with their grades to get them on the right path to academic success. All student athletes in this model are mandated to attend all academic success meetings, obtain a tutor, attend all study halls.
Think: Could this model to lead student-athletes to a successful academic career be used or replicated across the nation? I agree that some type of successful model does need to be instilled across the nation in every college so that their student athletes are successful in both aspects. This source reveals what the academic institution can do for its collegiate athletes and so how much of their significants matters to the school.
Synthesize: This sources matches and completes my other source by revealing more of what the academic institutions can do for their athletes. To put this source into conversation with my other sources I could use this one as a backing support to the claims of the other sources.
Question and plan: My research still needs dive more into the aspects of a student-athletes significance to the university or how the university perceives their athletes significance. Is there a certain model that works well for all colleges? The university is a big part in whether or not a student-athlete succeeds.
