Dream Dennis Source 1

Schneider, Raymond G. "College Students' Perceptions On The Payment Of Intercollegiate Student-Athletes." College Student Journal 35.2 (2001): 232. Academic Search Complete. Web. 6 Oct. 2016.

Question: What would the payment of student athletes mean to the rest of the student body?

My initial thoughts: Many college students face the same issues with money. Most are broke, and trying to find a way to make ends meet. There’s often a decent amount of students relying on student loans and scholarships to get them by. Most students even cringe at the thought of anything dealing with the Financial Aid department. But they’re typical students that’re trying to not fall behind in school, and often not able to go out and get a good paying/decent job. But on the other side of campus you have athletes on full ride scholarships. Meaning while us normal students are actually struggling with money, these athletes are actually receiving everything free from the university plus some actual cash.

This title caught my eye because it fits in perfect with my topic. While reading the article I noticed the author stating many thoughts going along and against athletes receiving payments, but decided to go in depth and mention what departments would deal with these payments. He also mentioned how this would affect normal college students.

When reading this source, I agreed with the solution of paying college students. Although, I’m stuck critically thinking because the source stated that most college students agreed with an increasing tuition just to fund the athletes. I think this sheds new light on how some students actually feel about these athletes. It also brings me to question this article’s findings, like maybe they only tested sports fanatics and not people who don’t care for sports. This article also shined light on the fact that some of these athletes receive illegal payments. This shown so connections between normal students and these athletes. The topic of Title IX was mentioned, which I’m not very familiar with; but seems to connect great with my topic.  I’m happy to see that students stated a free college education is enough reward and no payments shall be made. But in all honesty, I agree with the other students saying yes these athletes deserve to be paid but a fair equal source of money should be created.

This source led me to questions like how should we fund these payments for athletes? Would some sports earn more money than other? Since this is similar to a job, would it certain rules they need to abide by? Also, would students really agree with a rising tuition? Do most students pick a college because of their sports teams? Next, I plan on finding a source mostly leaning towards angry feelings towards payments. Once completing that task, I shall be able to properly answering my question of, What would the payment of student athletes mean to the rest of the student body?
