SOURCE 3
Step 1:
Wilkinson, David, et al. "Medical school selection criteria and the prediction of academic performance." Medical Journal of Australia 189.4 (2008): 235.
How is a GPA affecting medical students and is this the same standard held for minority students?
Before reading the source I am wondering if i can compare affects of minimum GPAs and causes to the corresponding questions relating to minority students. I think this will be helpful to see if there is any bias in articles and just more deeply explore my question as it seems to be significantly changing. I hope that after reading I will be able to form a more solidified research question.
Step 2:
Essentially the article explores the standards medical students are held to and certain correlations in academic behavior. They assessed the minimum GPAs and studied the resulting behaviors. The students came from many different backgrounds and as a result the study's results were scattered.
The source, although not completely objective and more of a scientific analysis, helped me understand my question a lot better. It also is helping me reform the focus of my topic. I don't think my initial beginning questions were answered by this article. Like I said though, it was beneficial to read.
This source responds to the other studies by exploring a different demographic and seeing if similar behaviors occur in students who are not minorities. This is a more specialized analysis. It answers some of my first journals question. I have a new idea of maybe switching my question from minority students to medical students. I began with this initial question but changed it to minority. I am thinking of going back as there seems to be more on this topic.
I'm having difficulty forming new questions on my current topic and am hoping altering my question a bit will help with this. I am wondering what role the professors and educator play in these situations and if they recognize this issue as something critical in the classroom/ lecture hall.
SOURCE 4
Step 1:
Atkin, Chris. Education And Minorities. London: Continuum, 2012. eBook Collection (EBSCOhost). Web. 14 Oct. 2016.
Before reading this source, I already have high expectations for the content. This book seems to be absolutely perfect for my topic and will likely help me form a better thesis. I'm hoping it will address some stereotypes about minority students. I don't have a specific question regarding this source but I'm sure I can develop one based on the information provided.
Step 2:
The parts of the book I read can be summarized in a few sentences. First, the book explores issues related to a disproportionate minority population, and how it is dealt with. Several chapters following go into specific cultural examples.
I question the bias of this text, as it seems to be objective but the stance taken is not. I don't disagree with it, but I am wary of it. I also am slightly let down by the information provided because it is less of an exploratory article/book than I had anticipated.
This can be synthesized with some of my last articles by again comparing the different stances taken on by the minority students.
I am left with a few questions after reading the book passages. Should there be standardized policies for minority admittance? Is there anyone looking at demographics and determining admittance?
